About Us
The Australian Wildlife Ambassadors was founded by the then Nairne & Districts Lions Club President, Brett Gabel and supported by the Club to be initiated. He invited local wildlife carer Jasmine to discuss shared concerns about a tree-banding issue by the local council that was preventing possums and koalas from accessing trees for food and safety. This conversation sparked the idea of forming a dedicated wildlife group to advocate for carers and organisations, providing support through fundraising and education.
Seeing the community’s enthusiasm, the Nairne Lions officially supported the establishment of the Australian Wildlife Ambassadors, with input from Jasmine and her mother, Leanne, both local wildlife carers. We thank them for their input in shaping this initiative.
While Brett and his wife, Deb, were already donating supplies to local wildlife organisations, the needs of carers go beyond these essentials. Carers and organisations often cover vet bills, ongoing training, licensing, food, and more. These costs quickly add up, and without consistent funding, maintaining long-term wildlife care programs can become challenging.
We look forward to working with others in the community that are passionate about wildlife and our environment.

Our team at Australian Wildlife Ambassadors is a group of dedicated Nairne Lions Club members united by a shared passion for protecting Australia’s unique animals and ecosystems. Each team member brings a wealth of knowledge, compassion, and energy to the project, working together to educate and empower our community on wildlife conservation. From coordinating rescue kits to organizing educational workshops, the team is committed to making a positive impact on wildlife and welcoming new members who are passionate about making a difference.
Meet the Team
Founder
Brett
Brett is the driving force behind the Australian Wildlife Ambassadors project. As the then-president of the Nairne Lions Club, he initiated the idea after meeting with local carers to discuss pressing wildlife issues, such as the impact of tree banding koala and possum habitats and the expansion of human housing into wildlife habitats. His parents were also long life Australian bird rescuers and were well respected among their peers for their work. Passionate about making a difference, Brett envisioned a dedicated team to support wildlife carers and raise awareness. His leadership and vision continue to inspire the club’s mission to protect and preserve Australia’s native species. Brett is currently also the Chairman of Environment and Green Canopy Projects of Lions C2 District encompassing SA and NT.
Nairne Lions President
Deb
As the current president of the Nairne Lions Club, Deb has played a crucial role in the Australian Wildlife Ambassadors team. Alongside her husband Brett, she has been a strong advocate for local wildlife, providing essential supplies and support to carers and organisations. Deb’s leadership and dedication reflect her passion for conservation, and she works tirelessly to further the club’s mission of educating and supporting the community in protecting Australia’s wildlife. She is passionate in supporting Brett's work in the wider community.

Dannielle
Dannielle is a passionate advocate for the coexistence of agriculture and wildlife, believing that sustainable farming and wildlife conservation can go hand in hand. Growing up on a family farm, she’s developed a deep understanding of both agriculture and the importance of protecting Australia’s native species. As a committed member of the Australian Wildlife Ambassadors, Dannielle brings her expertise to the team, working to educate others on creating harmony between productive farming and thriving ecosystems.

The Meaning Behind Our Logo
Our logo is a thoughtful representation of Australia’s unique wildlife, with each animal symbolizing different aspects of our mission.
The kangaroo stands at the core of the design, symbolizing strength, resilience, and the spirit of Australia's wildlife. As one of the nation’s most iconic animals, the kangaroo reflects the endurance and adaptability of the species we work to protect.
The possum, positioned as the chin, neck and arms of the kangaroo, signifies care and protection. It represents our commitment to nurturing and conserving wildlife, offering shelter and safety in an ever-changing world.
The butterfly, whose wings form the kangaroo’s ears, symbolizes transformation and renewal. As an emblem of hope, the butterfly highlights the potential for positive change in wildlife conservation and the restoration of ecosystems.
